Community Policing Training
Implicit Bias
The best way to combat implicit bias is to make people aware that it exists. The science and studies of implicit bias says everybody has it, to some degree, and pointing it out may be the first, best step to beating it. The ability to make sound decisions is an officer’s most important attribute.
Cultural Sensitivity
Policing strategies should establish links with local communities. Training in cultural sensitivity is crucial to an officer's performance. Cultural sensitivity training is an understanding of the history of the community and its members. Bringing attention to differences can promote effective crime reduction while building public trust.
De-escalation
Recent events around the country have underscored the need for and importance of lasting collaborative relationships between local police and the public. The ‘warrior approach impedes an officers’ ability to win the public’s trust.
Effective Communication
An officer’s effective communication enhances outcomes in citizen-police
interactions. Officers with effective interpersonal skills are in a better position to respond with competence and sensitivity to potentially volatile situations in their daily
work.
