The best way to combat implicit bias is to make people aware that it exists. Implicit bias has been shown to have significant influence in the outcomes of interactions between police and citizens. The science and studies of implicit bias says everybody has it, to some degree, and pointing it out may be the first, best step to beating it. More than thirty years of research in neurology and social and cognitive psychology has shown that people hold implicit biases even in the absence of heartfelt bigotry.
